Dear Sister Crow:
Your son, Elder Garrett Craig Hunsaker, has arrived and was welcomed into the California San Fernando Mission. We express to you our appreciation for your support and preparation of your son to be able to serve a mission at this time. You should be very pleased with your missionary's enthusiasm and desire to serve. We have enclosed a photo of your son with us which was taken on his day of arrival.

Your missionary has been prayerfully assigned a training companion, one of our strong missionaries, who will assist in strengthening your missionary's ability to share the gospel, and who will help develop the skills to do this effectively.
Letters that are encouraging and supportive are important. Please encourage your missionary to inform you when he is transferred to a new area of service. We encourage you to write once a week and to send packages and letters by US Postal Service to the apartment where your missionary is currently living.
Serving as a full-time missionary is a privilege. As your son is obedient to mission rules, temple covenants, gospel commandments, and works hard and diligently, great rewards will come to him now and after his mission.
Southern California is a popular destination for business and pleasure. It may be that you or other family members will be in the Los Angeles area while your missionary is serving in our mission. Experience has shown that visits from family or friends can be very disruptive in the life of a missionary. We ask that you avoid contact with your missionary other than through letters and the approved telephone calls.
This is a great work, and an exciting time to be serving a mission in California. We are so grateful for the opportunity to work with your son and pray that both he and you will be richly blessed for the service he will render and for the sacrifice you are making.
Sincerely,
Jerald L. Martin, President

My First Letter Home from the Mission Field
Date: 30 June 2010
Hey Mom,
I made it to the mission field safe and sound. It was so great to talk to you this morning. I don't have very much time to write but they are sending me to the middle of the desert, so mail may be delayed just a bit. Anyway, I love you so much and I promise I'll work hard. I'll write every week and let you know what's going on. Don't worry about me; the Lord is watching over me.
Signed:
Garrett Hunsaker
